چکیده

Experiments were performed on open-chest anesthetized dogs to determine the quantitative effects of autonomic nerve stimulition or pacemaker activity and conduction. The lead II electrocardiogram together with bipolar electrograms were recorded from the atria, the His bundles, and the ventricles. The vagi or the stellate gangba were stimulated in dogs which exhibited either sinus rhythm, ectopic atrial rhythm, junctional rhythm, or ectopic ventricular rhythm. The time courses of the change in heart rate in response to vagal or stellate stimulation were characteristic for each type of rhythm. The characteristic responses of different cardiac pacemaker sites to autonomic influence were demonstrated to be important factors in the production of wandering pacemakers and in the emergence of ectopic beats. Sinus pacemaker activity was more sensitive to modification by autonomic stimulation than was atrioventricular (AV) conduction. However, subliminal autonomic effects on AV transmission were brought out during conduction of premature atrial beats, thereby demonstrating a coupling interval dependency of autonomic influences on AV conduction. The present experiments also showed how fluctuations in autonomic activity could result in Mobitz type II second-degree heart block, psendosupemormal conduction, and the concertina effect observed in the preexcitation syndrome.

Effects of sympathetic tone on vagally induced phasic changes in heart rate and atrioventricular node conduction in the anesthetized dog.

We examined the effects of stellate ganglia stimulation on the phase-dependent chronotropic and dromotropic responses to brief vagal bursts in open-chest anesthetized dogs. Stellate stimulation affected the phasic vagal effects on heart rate by shortening the latent period, shifting the phase at which maximum decrease in heart rate occurred to earlier phases, and reducing the maximum decrease i...

Sympathetic and periodic vagal influences on antegrade and retrograde conduction through the canine atrioventricular node.

Concurrent stimulation of the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system causes a diminished sympathetic response at high levels of vagal activity. This "accentuated antagonism" has been demonstrated for cardiac chronotropic, inotropic, and dromotropic responses. The effect on conduction was demonstrated with tonic stimulation of the vagus nerve. However, normally ...

BRIEF REVIEWS The Influence of the Parasympathetic Nervous System on Atrioventricular Conduction

IN THIS brief review I will attempt to amalgamate current findings with important historical concepts about the influence of the parasympathetic nervous system on atrioventricular (AV) conduction. I first will describe the innervation of the AV nodal region. Then I will discuss the influence of acetylcholine and associated cholinergic agents, the effects of vagal stimulation, and the role of th...
